I write to update you on our presidential search.
Over the past few months, in meetings with faculty, alumni, parents, and other constituents, the Presidential Search Committee has received good feedback and suggestions about the attributes we should seek in the college’s 18th president. In almost every meeting, people have asked about the presidential election bylaw, which states, “The Trustees shall elect a President of the College who shall serve as the chief executive officer of the College. They shall elect only a person who is a loyal and active church member, whose life provides evidence of strong Christian faith and commitment. Such faith and commitment will be appropriately expressed by affiliation with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and active participation in the life of Davidson College Presbyterian Church.”
Given the community discussion during the initial phase of our presidential search, the Executive Committee believes that it is consistent with the college’s ideals to undertake a discussion about this bylaw, and we have committed to beginning that process within a year after Davidson’s new president takes office.
A discussion like this is important, involving complex issues and a range of opinions, and we want to be sure to allow for broad discussion with the extended Davidson community. I am confident that we will engage in this conversation thoughtfully and openly, with fairness and integrity. And as always, we will do what is best for Davidson College.
Let me close by thanking all of you for the time and care you have given to Davidson, and particularly to our Presidential Search. The college has a great deal of momentum right now. We have incredibly talented faculty and staff who are committed to providing the best possible experience for our students, and we’ve begun to implement many of the initiatives in our strategic plan. We had a record show of support for the college last year, and we led the nation in the percentage of alumni who made a gift to the Annual Fund. Our applications are strong, and The Davidson Trust and new merit-based and athletic scholarships are making the college accessible to students who couldn’t have imagined coming here in the past. This is an exciting time to be looking for Davidson’s next president, and we look forward to welcoming a new leader in the months ahead.
